Introducing BuddyPress Simple Google Map Plugin

Thanks to @Daniel for the suggesting this plugin. BuddyPress Simple Google Map plugin uses static google map apiΒ  to add the Maps to groups. It is tested to work with BuddyPress 1.2.9 as well as BuddyPress 1.3(bleeding).

In the current version, I have only added support for group and I am looking forward to your suggestion whether you will like to have the static map for User profiles too.

Features:-

  • Adds Google Map to Groups
  • Comes with Widget to showcase the map in sidebar
  • Simple to Use
  • Uses Google static Map, so no need for loading any extra javascript
  • Allows to enable/disable per group
  • You can set the basic settings in the admin panel.

Screenshots:-

Here is a screenshot of the map in action:-

Group Map tab

Admin Options:-

You can set the height, width, zoom level and the map type from BuddyPress->BP Simple Map admin options. Here are the two options to show it

Map Type:-

You can select from any of the four map types :- Roadmap, Terrain, Setellite, and Hybrid.

Zoom Level

You can select zoom level upto 21(highest) as shown below

Here is the widget settings screen

The widget will be visible on groups page only if the location is set and the map is not disabled.

The Location can be set from Groups->Group Name->Admin->Map as shown below

You can even disable the map for a particular group from admin->settings page

Ok, no more screenshots, now the time for action.

You can grab the plugin from below.

  • I've been looking for something like this for ages! It's a life saver, thank you so much!

I did find some a problem with my maps though. It seems to show me two markers on the map. One is the one I added in as an admin (in my case Davos), and there's another marker that's always appearing ( in my case St. Gallen). This also happened in all group maps I activated , in which I set different location makers.

On another note, is it possible to make the group map dynamic?
    Thank you so much!

    • Hi Lunaix
Thanks for the comment. I am glad it helped you πŸ™‚

I just tested it again with various zoom levels and could not produce the issue. can you please get me a screenshot of the location you have entered and the map you are getting.

As of dynamic map, yes that is coming in another plugin for bp 1.3(with a lot more options ).

  • Hi Brajesh. Tested the plugin on BP 1.3-bleeding install and it's working great. The addition of the Google map widget is a cool idea and I've discovered that it only appears in single Group page with the correct map – nice.

Thank you for the plugin, as always πŸ™‚

    • Hi Mercime,
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked it. Your comments have always been motivating and I sincerely appreciate your support πŸ™‚

  • i tought it was for profiles :S /cry

    • Hi Unsal,
sorry to disappoint. The support for User map will come soon too πŸ™‚

  • Great Job! I look forward to subscribing to your premium plugins!

  • I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Thank you!

Is it possible to get an overview map of all groups?

Ideally the map markers would provide a link to the group page.

    • Hi Mike,
      Thanks for the comment.
The static map won't allow linking. I will be putting another google map for bp 1.3 with the gmap 3.0 api, that will allow it.

      • Thanks for the reply Brajesh, will this also include an overview map capability to be able to display a map with all groups?

        • Hi Mike,
Yes, the upcoming plugin will include that(we are using google api v 3.0 for that).

  • Hello Brajesh,
Can we display the name of the address above the map ?
People see the map and the marker , but they don't see the destination , the exact address , should be nice to display the name of the address which group admins filled out in admin page. Or if you know the code for adding it , I can insert it myself .

    • Hi Daniel,
Please wait a couple of days for my other plugin(which uses the gmap api v3.0 and not the static map api). You will have almost all the features your users will need:)

  • -:) I have no more questions

  • Great Plugin

  • Great plugin Brajesh, Works fine, Simple but very affective,
Better than most I've tested these past few weeks and isn't complicated to use for my group admins,
I also like the sound of using it in members profiles also with the use of V3.0 πŸ™‚

    • Thank you Ben:)
You have always been a great help and as a developer your feedback matter a lot to me πŸ™‚ Will certainly have the member option in the update I am putting for 1.5.

  • +1 for profiles!

Would be great to pull all of the users locations into a single map for a widget (or static function)!

Thanks for your time and work!

    • Thank you Travis. Certainly coming in an update for Bp 1.5 πŸ™‚

  • Tim #

Would also like profile maps and particularly the ability to see a combined map of all site members (without needing to use groups).

Thanks for all the work so far!

    • Hi Tim,
The update for profile will be there by Tuesday.
I am still not sure if we can use static map for the other purpose(As It won't be clickable).

  • Hi Brajesh,
This may be beyond your scope, but I'll ask anyway… the ability to upload multiple cities, and ability to post a short comment on each location?

    Thanks,

    J

    • Hi John,
nice suggestion but I am not sure if i can make it into this plugin. Since I am working on another related plugin, so will take your suggestion and try to put that functionality πŸ™‚

  • Hey Brajesh, any progress on the Google Maps 3.0 version of this plugin? This is the last piece of the puzzle for my project, just wondering what the status is. I assume you were waiting for Buddypress 1.5 to hit the street before putting any more effort into it. Thanks for your hard work.

    Mike

    • Hi Mike,
I am sorry for the delayed reply. The plugin will take some time and I hope to put it around the last week of this month. sorry to keep you waiting for the gmap 3.0 version.

  • would love this for user profiles.

  • Hi Brajesh,
Again one of your plugins comes to my rescue! Has the new gmap 3.0 version been released? I'm really needing the ability to show all groups on one map functionality for a current project.

    • Hi LoriB,
sorry, I could not make much progress but the upcoming weeks will see update for all of the plugins I have promised. please wait for a couple of weeks for the new updates.

  • Glad to hear this may finally getting some movement. In the meantime I am moving forward with my project since it is time sensitive and I have to get it launched unfortunately the groups are largely based on locations so this overall map is going to be key for user functionality.

I have installed the plugin to get started, but my next question is will I be able to upgrade to the next version without much trouble?

Thanks again for all your hard work.

  • Hi Brajesh,

Are we getting close to a release to the map plugin?

    Regards,

    Mike

  • I hate to keep asking but can we expect the new map plugin anytime soon?

  • Is it safe to assume this is not going to happen?

  • Great plugin. Thanks again Brajesh.

I want to use it only for a few groups and change the default setting when creating a group. By default, I want groups without a map unless group admin explicitly turns it on.

I've located where I think I can make a change. Line 235 of bp-simple-google-map.php has:
    <input id="group-disable-bpsgmap" value="yes" checked="checked"/>

Can you suggest a change here that would only enable the map if a group creator explicitly turns it on and by default it would be off?

  • Has someone fixed the 2 marker bug?

  • Love this plugin but i hope it auto hide when no address input

  • Hi, I'm italian and I don't speak very well.
This version seem works on 1.8 buddypress to! The integration is very nice, but perhaps there are problems with style css

    • Thank you for confirming. Will look into the css part in future πŸ™‚

  • The plugin worked well, but when I installed on my wordpress 4.1/buddypress 2.2.1 system it broke the radial selectors in the group>manage>settings page. deactivating fixed selectors. any ideas? using avada theme

  • Hi Kristoff,
I am sorry for the trouble.
Which plugin are you using for radial selection? I tested it on a vanilla install and it is working, Maybe we have a conflict with the plugin. can you please point me to the plugin ?

    • I'm afraid that when I tried to recreate my issue by turning google maps back on, I was unable to recreate the error. I'm afraid I have wasted your time. it must have been some fluke. Sorry. Thanks for the reply though.

  • Hi, testing your plugin but unfortunately the backend of the plugin shows me a "Map Key". I generated a Google Map API Key but won't work. "Map Key" translation does not work although I translated everything. Don not get any Google Map view. Any help?

    • Hi Thorsten,
Once you have entered the key, Please visit a group and add some address to it. Once you are done with that, please check if the map appears on group or not?

      Thank you
      Brajesh
