There has been a lot of silence here recently and I had taken the much undeserved break for last couple of weeks. Now, I feel we need something to break the silence again and be back to the actual business, i.e writing plugins/codes.

So, here is the first thing in the series of updates coming this week. I have updated Sitewide activity widget and included all the features which were requested on the original release post.

Features:-

• Posting from widget
• Activity list can be restricted to logged in users activity when a user is logged in
• Blog admins can use the widget on their blog and It will show blog admins activity only.
• Show/hide avatar
• Show/hide feed link
• Show/hide the activity filters tab(the links that appear at the top and allows to filter the activity).
• Include only specific components activity in the sitewide activity widget(e.g include only profile/blog activities).
• Exclude only specific components activity from the sitewide activity widget(e.g exclude group activities from the activity list).
• Localization support

I hope, I was able to meet some expectations if not all.

How to install:- Just like any normal plugin. you may want to see this original post for more details.

One point to note is, the option “Show my activity” is there for blog admins to restrict this widget to show their activity only. This should not be used in conjunction with the “Show logged in users activity”. Also, now there is a css file included with the widget, you may disable loading of the css file by adding the following code to your functions.php/bp-custom.php

Enabling support for group wire

Please put the following code in your bp-custom.php

You can edit the css in your theme/wire/style.css and It will be automatically loaded.

Notification

A user can enable/disable email notification of new wire post from User->profile->settings->notification

Translating:-

I have put a po file in the bp-wire/languages directory.  To translate the bp-wire plugin to your language, please use poedit to generate the mo file. Rename the mo file as “bp-wire_YOUR_LOCAL.mo”, and put it in the languages directory.

Using wire with custom theme:-

To use wire with custom theme, you will need to modify a few files. The file of interest for you will be  “latest.php” for user wire and “group-wire.php”  for group wire.

After a long silence, I am back again, with another free plugin for BuddyPress. Blog Categories for Groups plugin allows you to associate one or more categories to a group and It will fetch and list all posts in those categories to group blog screen. The Idea for this plugin was conceived by Chris, and I just managed to put it as a plugin.

What It is:-

Have you seen Buddypress group blog plugin, if yes, then you should know about this plugin too. It does almost all the same thing as the group blog plugin does but It does not require  additional blog for each group. You can associate one or more categories to a group and the plugin will create a virtual group blog.

I had many of you asking for the ways to make cosmic buddy theme work with the group blog. So, here is “CB Group Blog” a child theme of cosmic buddy to use with the group blogs.

What It Is:-

This is a theme which should be used with Group Blog Plugin.

How to Use:-

• Download the theme from here http://buddydev.com/http//buddydev.com/public-download/cb-groupblog.zip
• Upload it to wp-content/themes
• Login to wordpress dashboard and make the theme visible from Site Admin->Themes
• Now go to Buddypress->Group Blog setup
• Select CB Group Blog as shown below and save.

• That’s it. From the next time a group blog is created, this theme will be activated automatically, giving a seamless look for group and group blog.

The current theme is 2 columned, so I miss the area for widgets, if you think the same and want a 3 column theme which will allow you to add widgets, please do let me know in comments.

I am glad to announce the “Global forums Plugin” for buddypress today. It is available now  and this post is aimed to show you what this forum plugin is meant for and what it can do.

The global forum Plugin allows you to create sitewide forums(as you see in bbpress) which are not linked to any group. It works just like standalone forum with the exception of a few things(like template/plugins). Thanks to @Greg for bringing the idea of global forum in buddydev forum and here we have it.

features:

• Standalone sitewide forums
• Allows you to create subforums
• Support for category forum*
• Fully templatable
• templatable admin section for forum management
• Full tag support(add tag/delete tag)
• And most of the thing which you expect from bbpress is available.

Let me show an example from my dev system.

Forum Front End:-

Here is the home screen for the global forum

So, the home screen is just like a normal standalone forum where you get the list of all the forums/subforums and the latest discussion topics.

If you are an admin/mod you can see the tab which says admin. I will go into details of admin section later.

Users can create new topic from forum home or from any of the child forum screen.

Single Topic Page

Here is a thread/single topic view

You can post new reply/manage topic from here.You can make a topic sticky/unsticky, close it/open it and many more from any of the topic page. From the topic page, you can also add/delete tags.

If you go to a particular sub forum, It will list all the child forums of that forum and the most recent discussions in that forum as shown below

For each of the tag, we get a tag page which lists all the topics containing  that tag as shown below

Now let us have a look at the admin screens. When you click on Admin tab at the top, you will be presented with the admin dashboard which shows a concise view of forum stats and let you perform various admin task. here goes the dashboard.

From the admin screen, you can create new forum/manage forums, manage users and perform some other task.

Forum Management page allows you to edit/delete/add new forum.

Edit forum:-

You can edit a forum title/description/parents from Manage forum. Click on Edit forum under the forum name and you will be presented with a screen like this

If you decided to delete a forum, you can always move the topics to some other forum or just opt to delete entire forum andtopic.

You can add new forum from manage forum page or  from the  Create forum page as shown below

User Management:-

You can manage users from the user management page. you can ban a user, promote to mod/promote to admin and demote to normal users. Banning will stop the user from creating topic/posting replies. Here is a shot from my dev. You can see the banned user has a distinct color code.

Limitations of Global forum:-

• Currently you can not manage users in Bulk(i.e Can not ban 10 users by checking the box, It is coming in next version)
• Some of the features may not be perfect
• Code is not organized well, I will be organizing them properly in next release which should be next week
• And I forgot to include the rss feed support, so It may come tomorrow

Plans for future

In recent future, I will be updating theme for better activity listing. This is on my list of todos. Also, We will rewrite the theme for Bp 1.3 to remove the bloating of codes which happened for Bp 1.2 support /upgrade. So the cosmic buddy for bp 1.3 will be completely rewritten keeping the same look and feel but coded for better performance. Also I am working on the documentation to show you how to create child themes of cosmic buddy and how to extend it.   So let us hope for the best.

Hi all

I am glad to be back to the normal BuddyPress things again and I will like to stop the silence of a week with the plugin BP Flickr.

This plugin allows your users to showcase their Flickr Photos on their profile as below.  My thanks goes to Chris for constantly reminding me about this plugin(Chris, you are listening )

This plugin does not fetches the feed as xml as most other plugins do, rather I have fetched feed as serialized PHp(Thanks to Flickr for allowing serialized php feed). That makes it much fast and efficient than parsing the xml.

What It does:

Allow your Users to set their flickr NSID and show their latest 20 photos on their profile.

Features:

• Uses serialized php feed from flickr to make the things efficient
• Fully packed template tags, do whatever you want
• Change the css in your theme(yourtheme/flickr/style.css) and that will be used
• Pretty Photo lightbox is included with the plugin

How to Use It:-

Installation

• Download bp-flickr.zip
• Unzip it and move “bp-flickr” to your wp-content/plugins
• Login to Wordpress backend, go to Dashboard->Plugin and Activate “Bp-Flickr”
• Move “flickr” folder from bp-flickr to your active theme
• Check your profile and enter the settings for your flickr account there(Flickr NSID)

Do you miss the wire of buddypress 1.x era. Yes, you can use the activity as wire. You might have seen it on buddypress.org profile.

Thanks to Andrew for asking this question and here is the way to use activity as wire.

How to do it:

You will need to edit at 3 places.

• We will edit members/single/activity.php
• activity/post-form.php and
• functions.php

Step 1: Showing the form on other user’s profile

Let us start with members/single/activity.php

Since we want the post forum to appear on all the users profile, we will change a line in the members/single/activity.php

on line 39-41 in bp-default theme(or find the relevant line in your theme)’s activity file you will see something like this

So, we have taken out the condition bp_is_myprofile() and now the form will be displayed on other users profile too.

But wait, did you notice that silly drop down below the form which will appear on other users profile as shown above.

No problem, let us tweak the form slightly.

Step2: Customizing the activity post form

Open bp-default(or your theme)/activity/post-form.php

on line no. 36 of the file(or please check the condition in your theme) you will see something like this

Let us change it to

If you have completed the above steps, you should pat on your back, ohh yes, you are 30% done

ok, ok, let us give the final touch.

Step 3: Handling the posting of message

What we need more is we need to handle the special case of using activity form to post on other users profile.

That’s easy. We will remove the ajax action which comes by default in bp-default theme and add our own to handle the update.

Add the following lines to your functions.php

If you take a look closely, there is a catch still there, when you are on other users profile it still asks you what’s new mr. awesome ?, well awesome should be your first name, we need to change it to displayed user’s name, should not we.

So, we need to modify the activity/post-form.php again.

This time, we will modify the following lines(for bp-default, it starts on line no. 17)

You may want to use this wired Child Theme or just move individual files to their respective folders in bp-default(or the child theme for better future updates). Hi All

Just wished to keep you all informed of the upcoming projects/current status.

The last 3-4 days were highly demanding/hectic on my part as I travelled around more than a thousand Kilometers, and that’s why I was not very frequent at forum/updating things.

Yesterday evening(IST), I reached back to my workplacre, took some rest, and here I am back to work as regular from today.

Now I am going to finish the delayed projects on a priority basis

here is what’s coming this week:-

• Global Forum – Wednesday/Thursday
• Bp Chat:-Hopefully Sunday
• BP Gallery Updates:- Will depend on BuddyPress 1.2 release
• Another Undisclosed major plugin:-Saturday/Sunday
• and a few more
