I have posted the same article also on buddypress.org , and now also here , take it as an another plugin suggestion, I would love to have a categorized groups , as far as I know there's no plugin for that yet (I know that buddypress tags should do the work , but I would like to mark every group in group creation process as a type of group (as buddypress tags does(text field separated by comma) but this time as a dropdown field giving you possibility let's say of 3-5types of groups)) and then show it in Groups Directory (but divided by ajaxed TABS ) , so only thing I wish , (when supposed that I am a sport fan ) is to have the possibility to split the TABS in Groups Directory and to have more TABS like :
All Teams (113) | My Groups (101) | Ice Hockey Teams (63) | Football Teams (30)| Basketball Teams (20)

Do you mean A group can be tagged to only one category and then show it as you have specified in the last line ?

I mean to add a dropdown field or radio button below Titel and Description which will represent the type of a GROUP - in my case : I have a website with nightclubs and agencies providing jobs in nightclubs and dancers who search for info about those clubs (photos , working conditions), thats why I have 2 groups : Nightclubs & Agencies.
MEMBERS are dancers , hostesses , club owners , agencies owners , so when I create a new group I need to specify if the group is a club or an agency , so dropdown menu or radio button with 2 options= Nightclubs , Agencies
then menu with 4 TABS will looks like this:
All groups(1000) My groups(500) Nightclubs(700) Agencies(300)If the group is an agency or nightclub I would like to use an icon(image custom field) in Groups Directory below every group avatar.

Buddypress tags plugin I would use for more detailed info about the groups.Dividing Groups into other groups I would use to better organizing groups , because I don't want people to search for agency when they search for nightclub and on the contrary.
