Oops, forgot to mention a most important part of step 1 above:
Superadmin could hide main blog from navigation, either making it a private page, exclude pages plugin, hardcoding the template, whatever. That way, the ONLY way users could contribute would be by joining a group.

Sorry for not replying for a while, I got a bit sidetracked by my Dad’s declining health.

Doh, he says, slapping his forehead. You’re right: bp-gallery was not activated sitewide.
The error message is gone (hooray!) but no thumbnail appears; just the link to the gallery. I’ve tried different themes to rule that out but, no luck: no thumbnail.

One problem though: although recent visitors’ avatars do show where they should, the Recent Visitors Options don’t show in Profile Settings.
