Hello,
I’m looking for a plugin that allows members of a group to message one another without the need to connect/friend with them globally.
I don’t allow people to message one another without “connecting/friending” with one another. But it would be nice if people could message one another within a group setting without creating a global (site-wide) friendship. I would like them to have the option to OPT OUT of group messaging individually.
Do you know of anything like this?
Thanks
Hi Dianne,
Thank you for the question. Are you using any plugin or code to apply the message restrictions currently? Please let us know and we should be able to help asset you adapt it for group members as well.

BrajeshHi Dianne,
Thank you.
I have looked into it. I am assuming that you are using BuddyBoss platform pro to apply restrictions? Please allow us till day end Monday to put a solution(via code).
Regards
BrajeshHello,
Yes, I’m using BB Pro. I didn’t expect you to create the solution — However — that would be a giant blessing!
Thank you
Hi Dianne,
Please look at the following screenshot:
https://tinyurl.com/yrq8lkn4You can see this setting under Group > Manage > Settings.
Have you tried this setting and allowed group members to send messages?
You will see the following screen after allowing

RaviHello,
I am aware of this setting. What I’m looking for is not Group Messages where all members can send a group message. What I’m looking for is a GROUP FRIENDSHIP/Connection. I would like people to be able to send messasges to one another individually, not as a group message.
For example: There are 50 people in the group. No one has created a “friendship” between each other. The Group Admin doesn’t want to flood group member inboxes with messages when one person wants to message only one or two members of the group.
So, Member #1 wants to send a message to the Group Admin and one other member of the group (not the entire group). However, they have not friended each other. Right now they must be friends on the entire site. This can be a privacy issue when viewing “friend posts”. A person would need to go into the group to see the posts or receive an email notification from the group for that individual.
I hope that this makes sense. Basically,
* Group Members are “friends” with content and messages within the group.
* Group Members may or maynot be friends outside the group.
* Group Members would still receive newsfeed notification emails.
* Group Members can use moderation tools to block individuals within the group if necessary.
* SPAM safeguard: Members of the group can OPT OUT of receiving group message notifications.I hope that my explanation clarifies the need. I usually advise Group Admins to make Group Messages available to Group Admins only. If you’ve ever been on a group text on your phone before, you know how annoying it can be to receive responses when a couple of people in the text group start replying to one another over and over again and conversation isn’t relevant to anyone else in the group.
I’m pretty sure that this would be difficult to implement. That’s why I am hoping that you know of a plugin that does this.
Thanks
Please see my previous post and note this correction:
* SPAM safeguard: Members of the group can OPT OUT of receiving group message notifications FROM INDIVIDUALS.
Members would still get GROUP MESSAGE notifications, which is different. BuddyBoss allows members to OPT OUT already from group notifications. That would be separate.
Thanks again!
Hi Dianne,
Thank you for the replies. No worries about it. I will discus it with Ravi on Monday.
Here is what I understand from your requirements” On a BuddyBoss Install, all members from a users group should be able to send private message to the individual user irrespective of any other restrictions”.is that correct?
Thank you
BrajeshHi Brajesh,
I think of it in very simple terms. Think site friendships and group friendships. In the group, the only restrictions are:
* The user is blocked (moderation tool)
* The user has opted out of receiving group friendships for THIS SPECIFIC GROUPWhen the person leaves the GROUP, they no longer have the GROUP friendship status for this GROUP. If they are site friends with some of the group members, they remain SITE friends.
I hope this makes sense. Thank you
