Hi James,
Thank you for asking. The cosmic Buddy Theme is not compatible with BuddyPress 1.8+. I have updated some part of it this week and plan to finish it in the coming week( May take me 5-6 days).
Here is the currently updated theme on which I am working.

If you can wait for 5-6 days, I am going to rewrite this theme for BuddyPress 1.9+( & 2.0 ) compatibility.
