Activity Feed Posts And Commenting

I’m testing MediaPress on my site as a possible alternative to Buddyboss Media and while I love the functions for galleries and shortcode to display them, I’m confusing by the logic of the BuddyPress integration when it comes to comments and the Activity Feed. I tested the demo on your site, and it works the same way so my comments below are in regard to your demo, and I’ve seen older threads with requests to change it, but it appears to still work in this fashion.

Each comment in the lightbox gets reposted to the Activity Feed with the image, over and over again… this seems bizarre, as you end up with multiple posts and it fills up the activity feed with the same image and a single person’s image. I assume the goal was to emulate Facebook and how it boosts posts with comments, but Facebook only moves the SAME post, it doesn’t create multiple iterations in order to bump new content. This is very confusing to people. On my site, once someone posts, there are usually 7 or 8 comments immediately, so the Activity feed would be filled with 7 or 8 of the SAME image in this current logic.

Is there a way to have ALL the comments stay only with the original image post in the Activity Feed, and the comment counter in the Activity Feed accurately reflect the number of all comments for a single image posted, like Facebook?

As it stands, I guess the only way would be to deactivate the comment button in the Activity Feed, and force all comments to the lightbox to avoid confusion? But then there’s still the issue of having the same image post multiple times in the Activity Feed each time a new comment is added? Can this function be stopped?

    Hi Charlie,
    Welcome to BuddyDev.

I believe we are following the normal procedure and the activity needs to be set in threaded view to fix it. I will check and update you later today.

    Thank you

Thanks! This plugin is lightweight and amazing… I really do love it. The main oddity that I’ve never seen on any social site is that rather than just have a new activity post of the comment alone, you actually repost the photo along with the comment. This means someone’s image can take over the activity feed and is replicated multiple times. As folks on Facebook have learned they can simply comment on their own post to bump the same post back to the top, this way makes it worse as people can force their image to show over and over again in a row. This re-posting of a new iteration of the image along with the new comment isn’t a behavior I’ve seen on any other Buddypress gallery plugin or on Facebook, Twitter, etc so I wanted to check. (well… that and the comment count under a photo not updating to match the number of comments on the original post).

Any updates on this? Curious to know if there’s a way to fix commenting so it functions in a more intuitive way and all comments are collected and counted accurately anytime someone comments on a single photo, whether in the lightbox or Activity Wall post? All comments regarding a single photo should be collected and associated with that photo since this is what users expect. Is this possible with your plugin?
