Hi there, making the user experience good, is key to a successful site.
One thing with WordPress and BuddyPress, which is nothing but that, is what I call the double name registration.
I know the technical explanation to, why you have to create an account username, with WordPress, and a profile name with BuddyPress, but it is not logic to users.
There must be a way of smoothing up this nerdy process by auto filling and hiding the mandatory BuddyPress profile name request, so the users only have to relay to create on name for their account/profile?
Another issue withe the account registration, is that it do not accept letters æ,ø,å, which is common letters in names, where I live. Allowing these letters with code modifications contains a safety risk.
How do you explain to your users, that they can’t use there real name in the account registration process, but will have to use two synonyms, or repeate the name in the process.
That is why, only asking for a synonyms profile name in the registration would make the process easier and more logic.
Users can relate to, and accept that they can’t create a profile name containing æ,ø,å.A registration plugin which handles this process is much needed, a code snipped would also be much appreciated.

Exactly the same with the mandatory “Subject” line, when creating a BuddyPress Message.
Who approaches each other, in a closed, informal forum, by filling in a formal subject to their message?
Let’s have an option for turning off this formal approach, when messaging each other in our membership forums.

About the issue with 2 names. I have done it for client in past it id possible to do away with the username part.The problem that you will face is:-
1. Unpredictable usernames(which is used in the url slug, mentions)
2. Or you will need to define some mechanism for usernames(for example on one of the site we used the 2 letter short name + 8 integers random integer for generating unique username)The same can be done with the Messages. You can create the subject transparently and do away with the limitations.
There are no ready to use solutions available for the same. Most probably I will find some time and post some blogs about these two.

Hi Carsten,
I do understand the problem that you are facing. Still, BuddyPress is not aimed for specific use case. It is highly flexible and that flexibility comes with certain things that may not be suitable for all.The good news is, You can still make it your way.
The purpose of having 2 names is to use one for using in the display name and one for identifying uniquely across the sites. Many sites have it(e.g Twitter). Some sites do not ask it on registration, but they all use it in some way and let you change in future.
I will post a blog post with solution for the cases when you don’t need the username and just want to work with the display name.
