Thank you Brajesh it worked straight away, I thought that would be an easy one for you. 🙂
As I say the information I found on the net about how to do this was incorrect, completely different from your solution.

Still haven’t found out what’s causing it, I did use a modified version of your code above, which has brought it back. I’ll look for what’s causing the problem at a later date, this one took up too much time.
Thanks very much for your help Brajesh as always.

Didn’t work unfortunately, I thought I had traced the problem down to one plugin, but not yet.

Thanks Brajesh,
I’ll try this…
I was lucky, plus I thought like before, when did the problem start, and what have I added recently. It was the first one I tried (plus it puts stuff in the admin bar).
WP Foro (forum software) is the one to blame.
There I said it wouldn’t take as long as last time. 🙂
Hi Brajesh,
I promise this won’t go on as long (hopefully)
Not using WP Ulike (not heard of that). I could understand it being another plugin but the actual notifications are blank too when I go to read them (see screenshot) so I can’t click to see what they are.
This is when you hover over the notification in the admin bar

Thanks, I did and you’re right it should have caused a fatal error, but nothing was behaving correctly at that time. I can’t believe it came down to that one plugin, especially as I’d disabled them all and Buddypress was still not showing the button.
Anyway, hopefully I won’t be back for a while (which is a good sign)
