I might have misread your question. The above plugins allow it while posting update.
Most probably, you will need to handle it yourself(add a popup, may be use webui-popover?) and doing a bit of ajax.

After upgrading to 1.4.0 you can put following line in bp-custom.php
add_filter( 'mpp_send_bp_notifications', '__return_true' );
It will notify the user when someone comments on their photo. It won’t notify for the replies on comments though.
Please note that I will be moving away from current commenting feature in 1.5-1.6 as it seems too much confusion. Also, the filter was named incorrectly, next time, I will rename it to ‘mpp_send_bp_notifications_on_comment’.

I just installed the plugin and tested. It is working fine for subscribers even using links. My guess is it is conflicting with something else.
Is there a chance that you are using any activity related plugin like wall/wire/privacy/share etc? Try disabling them and checking .
