Thank you for the question.there is no sure shot solution. If you are creating a generic community where anyone can register, your best bet is to go with 2 things:-
1. Use plugin/code to disable bot registration. It will limit the number of spam signups.
2. Use a plugin like BuddyPress Registration Options to moderate the signup.For Communities(like intranet), there are other strategies(like limiting registration to certain email domains, using a invite code etc).

Hi Julia,
THank you for using the plugin.1. Currently the plugin does not disable any functionality. We can add the option to disable “Cover Photos” based on member type. We can also add the options to disable posting to activity or commenting on activity but we will not be able to disable activity stream. If we disable activity stream component for some users and leave that for others, It will cause more problem than it solves.
Let me know if the above restrictions will help? We can add it then.

When you are creating a field, you will notice “Member Types” option like this
