There is a simple way to disable the emails if you need them to.
But I will go with 2nd approach and reword the email as a way to verify email(not activate account) and tell them that their email is verified but account awaiting approval.
That makes sense.

I am not sure about the viability of an anonymous group. Technically it is doable but it will need co-ordination from 3rd party plugins to work without revealing the personalised details.

The Youzer is causing a lot of issue on your site. Try loading it over a slow connection to see it.
As of the text, It is line-height that you need to set.
Something like this
.widget-content.invite-anyone p {
line-height: 1.5em;
}
May do the trick.

We will add a hook and you can let that to enable/disable for certain groups. Will that work for you or you need some kind of UI?
