Is there a chance that you are using BuddyPress 4.0 ? It was a bug in BuddyPress 4.0. Please upgrade to BuddyPress 4.1 and you will be able to work with it.

I am afraid it is not that easy.
The forums will need different set of UI as well as query filters which is different from activity. I can give it a shot this weekend(I can’t guarantee the inclusion though) if you can wait for that.

I am sorry, The plugin only supports BuddyPress Activity. It does not support group forums, topic or even blog post/blog comment.

For smtp I personally prefer

as it seems to have a simple interface.
For mail logging, you can use any option ans it will be only a temporary thing and you will be disabling after the email testing.

My suggestion will be install a mail log plugin and check if mails are being sent. If sent, and still not received by users, you should most probably opt for a smtp plugin to send mail.

It was a custom theme using custom css ids. I have updated it on site and the sub nav from directory should be gone.
I have only specifically done it for /activity page. If you want me to hide it on others, Please do let me know.
