Thank you for the question.BuddyPress does not provide any way to achieve it. It is possible to do that by hacking around some code.
Which theme and template pack are you using? Please let me know and I will share the code.

Welcome to BuddyDev support forums.The Auto join Group plugin can help you achieve the first part. It works with Roles/Member types, so should work fine with RCP.
It does not sync users on removal from group. We have member types pro that does it but it won’t work with BuddyBoss.

The first snippet limits display and not store and the second snippet you have shared has limited scope.What is your goal with it.Do you want to limit(truncate) description before saving or do you want to show error if a user posts more than ‘n’ characters?
