Please visit dashboard->Settings->General menu and you will find the “Membership” option with label ” Anyone can register”. Uncheck and save. That turns off the registration completely.

PS:- I just confirmed with BuddyBoss platform 1.4.9 that it is working. It is most probably some minor conflict.

Do you completely want to turn off registration? If so, you can do it form Dashboard->Settings->General screen.

Also, BuddyPress already adds the class for member type to body element. It is
member-type-{member-type-name}
For example, if ‘student’ is member type, It is
member-type-student
