Thank you. I believe the problem lies with your theme.
I have tested with the same configuration and here is what I see

My suggestion is to temporarily switch theme to check if it is coming from the theme or some plugin/custom code.

You can pass
displayed="Yes"
to show the avatar of the displayed user.
Example
[bpps_profile_avatar displayed="Yes"]

e.g when a student is logged in, they only see teachers?
and when a teacher is logged in, they only see students?
