The error markup is handles by BuddyPress. I tested on legacy and it looks same for custom field as well as core.Is it different on BP Nouveau? If yes, Most probably they are doing extra filtering on nouveau.

The error markup is applied by BuddyPress and not this plugin. Please inspect the error message and you will see ‘error’ class is applied over a div.
